Brands and Target Audience

Just got struck with this flash of insight.
Brands know that they talk to a particular kind of a customer (often called target audience) with branding messages and communication. But do these customers know that the brand is talking to them? Exclusively to them?

I guess if you have your finger on the TG’s pulse, then the audience tends to say “Ah! this product if for people LIKE ME.” Then they might believe the brand is talking to people ONLY like them.
